Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study reveals that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
